NOVEMBER 2022 | AWARDS

We are pleased to announce that 8 Phillip Street recently won a High Commendation Award under the Small Medium Projects Category at the Association of Consulting Structural Engineers NSW (ASCE NSW) 2022 Awards for Excellence.

To conserve the Southern façade of the St Andrew’s church hall heritage fabric, Coronation Property alongside Robert Bird Group, developed an integrated construction methodology and sequence solution, to transfer the existing church hall masonry structure onto the permanent suspended slab, while allowing excavation of the 9-storey basement to occur below.

The plunge column integration, location of steel needle beams and the width of the suspended slab was strategically selected to allow maximum retention of the church hall while allowing the future jump form to pass unimpeded upwards.

The ASCE NSW judges cited:

  • This was a fascinating project, that was a portion of a much bigger development,
where an historical church had to be supported to allow an excavation to be carried
    out below.
  • There were significant complex challenges in preserving a historic façade.
  • This project shows a complete understanding of the pitfalls in underpinning a brittle
    building and re-supporting it.
  • The engineering skill involved is considerable as any mistakes could be catastrophic.
  • A very well-developed design.
